Choosing Your Soil For Grapes Growing

Growing grapes will take a lot of time and does need patience. Don't try planting grapes if you expect a rich harvest immediately. All grapes will need abundant water supply, a rich soil and ample sunlight. As soon as 2 to 3 years pass since planting grapes should appear. You can obtain those "labor fruits" only if you are properly taking care of your grape wine. Whenever growing grapes pai attention to soil chosen.

Always think about the characteristics that your chosen grapes variety has. Every grape variety is unique and has to be taken care accordingly. The grape variety that you are growing will have a direct impact on the length of the growing season. You will have to look for a grape species that has a proven track record of growing properly in the area where you live in. Study the climatic conditions and soil of your locality and choose the species you wish to grow accordingly to get best results.

Choose the proper soil. The soil is responsible for providing the support and nourishment to your crop. An unsuitable soil can ruin all your chances of having a rich harvest, irrespective of what fertilizer etc you use. Soils let you know about plant nutrients gained, water absorption and roots drainage. The chosen soil needs to be good enough to absorb a lot of water and dran it properly so that root saturation does not appear. Before planting rootstocks and seeds you need to check the toxicity of the soil.

Before planting rootstocks make sure that their health is proper. If immediate planting is not possible then you have to keep your rootstocks under water for a maximum of 1 day so it will not rot. Neither can you leave your rootstocks in the open as they tend to dry up soon too. If you are stuck and do not know how you can retain rootstocks in the event that there is a need for longer storage then you can always cover them with soil and create one temporary trench.

Between 2 rootstocks you need to keep a gap of around 8 feet and 5 feet between plants is also necessary. The first few months bring in a need to offer much water to the plants. Later on though keep an eye on the drainage of the soil carefully. If the drainage is not proper then there are chances that the roots may rot and the plant may get infected.

The leaves of the plants have to be analyzed. They are going to alert you if there are problems with the plants. If you notice a rich color then you can be sure that a proper supply of minerals and nutrients is received. Their color should be dark green if they are healthy. You may choose to put some compost near the roots to replenish the soil. As it was mentioned earlier, grapes growing is a process that is lengthy. If you are looking for great harvests then you have to plant the grapes in great soil and make sure that enough sunlight exposure exist.
